Since its inception in 2000, Manocalda’s mission has been to take people on a journey through sound, and that mission continues apace here with an EP from label founders Pastaboys (aka the Italian trio of Rame, Dino Angioletti and Uovo) alongside Keemani, one half of Blue Mondays complete with a remix from French producer, DJ and Real Tone Records boss, Franck Roger.
The original track, ‘You Can Count On Me’, is a chugging, downbeat slice of house with a darkened bassline mumbling below more spritely percussion. Sad synths and lingering piano chords hang in the background to bring a keen melancholic vibe and the whole thing hangs around the rueful vocal, which repeats the title’s refrain. Moody and emotive, this is mature house music for the more sensitive dancefloors out there.
The first remix comes from Franck Roger who adds plenty of his usual tech house touch to the track, with slicing percussion and well rooted drums forming a nice groove that grows ever more slinky from start to finish.
Finally, Blue Mondays add their dub touch to the original and strip it of much of the clutter, instead hanging the track around a dirty, buried deep bassline that mumbles and grumbles invitingly as the percussion skits about up top.
All in all a tasty package with three quite different offerings all hitting different spots of the dancefloor.
