Electrophil Records continues to grow as a platform for Basel-based electronic artists with the release of its first ever compilation, entitled Gare de Bâle – The Sound of Basel.

Rather than rely on label staples, Electrophil wanted to use the compilation as a means of unearthing hidden talent and so ran a competition offering producers both young and old the chance to become a part of Basel’s wider electronic narrative. After much deliberating, 11 tracks were selected, bringing together elements of house, techno and electro from both cantons of this swiss area.
Experienced pairing Deep Bros open the compilation with ‘Moments’, easing the listener in on a bed of warm, affable chords and cosmic synths. Debutant duo Moritz & Max ensure the energy is kept bubbling away with ‘Retro Dancer’, whose jazzy, pumping groove conveys a maturity beyond their years. ‘Hooked’ by Malicious Joy meanwhile dips its toes into deeper territory, combining a gogo rhythms with classic house vocals, while Fred Licci & Denis Capizzi round off a more than buoyant introduction with the thickset, infectious stylings of electronic house number ‘Greenpuma’.

Joining forces on ‘Kunststofftraum’ are Gin Tonic Soundsystem & G-Rillo, who delve into the swirling recesses of guitar-inflected tech house before seasoned white-isle enthusiasts Mike & Nika turns things up a notch on ‘Ibiza Esta Loca’. Cuts from Francesco Ballato and 22 year old Floyd Hatton represent the more twisted side to the city’s musical character, layering an eerie miscellany of sounds – from glitchy bleeps and blips to ominous bass swells – over sparse minimal frameworks. Serbian-born producer Branislove rounds off the more underground side of things with ‘Berlin’, an appropriately epic slice of tech house that will have the listener fully entranced by way of its resonant, emotive core.

At first glance, ‘Ali Baba Sings His Song’ and ‘Not The Way’ – by Ned O’Neal and Dodobeatz & Thimlife respectively – seem somewhat incongruous amongst the compilation’s previous, deeper selections. That said, both records offer a rich and invaluable look into the more upfront electronic markets that the city has to offer. Ned O’Neal’s strong arab influences combine beautifully with his pummelling peak-time framework, while ‘Not The Way’ closes out this vibrant, auspicious cross-section of Basel’s sonic being with a proper, no-nonsense cut of jackin’ electro house.
