Colour Series is the new digital label from We Love Space resident Jem Haynes. The label is based on a condition Jem has called Synesthesia, which means that every sound he hears paints a different colour in his mind. For example, a baseline may be a deep blue colour and the melody of a track may be bright yellow or red. During last summer in Ibiza, Jem produced a series of tracks with different colors in mind and thought the best way to bring them all together is via a new digital label.
On Colour Series Volume 1, Jem does exactly that on an auspicious compilation that speaks volumes of all the producers involved. As a weekly resident at We Love.Space, Ibiza, Jem himself is an artist at the pinnacle of his powers. Playing weekly inside the Discoteca (Space’s famed ‘Room of Doom’) and on the Terraza and Sunset Terrace Rooms has enabled him to consistently run shoulders with the great and good of the global dance music community. Gigs at the UK’s finest establishments have included The Warehouse Project and Sankeys, Backtobasics and Ministry of Sound, with global turns all around the world to boot.
Another regular collaborator here is Mike Peters. Mike has been DJing and organizing music events for the last 10 years in Zurich and all over Switzerland. It was at one of Mike’s parties in Zurich a few years ago that he first booked Jem Haynes. Since then, the pair have gone on to collaborate in the studio on a regular basis. In his DJ sets, Mike takes inspiration from a wide range of musical influences, making them diverse and unique.
After watching a TV series called Treme, good friends and fellow We Love Space residents Jem Haynes & Ian Blevins’ Second Line guise was born. They sought inspiration in the songs, drums and rhythms from the music in the series for their first EP on Colour Series. They have gained rapid support from many of the leading players in the house and techno scene including Jozif, Slam, Stephan Bodzin, Andrew Grant, Luciano and Booka Shade.
Sam Chorlton is another protagonist making serious ground with his productions. Sam’s passion for house and techno was born in the late 90’s when he regularly attended the Middlesbrough Empires famous ‘Sugar Shack’ parties. It wasn’t until May of 2012 that Sam was introduced to Ableton Live by a friend. Not even one year on, Sam’s first two releases in the early part of 2013 on the ‘Sounds of Juan’ label have already attracted interest from some of the scene’s major players, not least Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Stacey Pullen, Cassy and more. Sam’s journey has only just begun, and with further releases on the way, be sure to keep a close eye on the Colour Series new boy!
Another of those involved, Rick Grant, is a DJ, producer, and one third of Take Records, who have released music from Bearweasal, Consequence, Eliphino, Locked Groove and Simoncino to name a few. Rick’s DJing is about finding common elements across a variety of styles which has seen him appear as a regular fixture at London’s fabric for several years. While his production looks to combine the aesthetics of house and techno with the rhythmic elasticity of the UK underground.
Sean O’Keeffe appears on Colour Series in a new alias, Shimiko, one that demonstrates his new house and techno sound. Best known for his classic rave anthem ”Bombscare” as 2Bad Mice and seminal D&B track ”The Helicopter Tune” as Deep Blue, Sean’s music has been played by everyone from Goldie to Carl Craig to Derrick May, and has even appeared in Playstation classic Grand Theft Auto.
